Why we choose him?
Proven goal scorer from defense at the club level, which is rare. If you're strict about qualifying goals only, he might not qualify. But if you're flexible for "defenders who score," he absolutely does.
1. Portugal Have a Favorable MD1 & MD2 Fixture
Portugal faces DR Congo in MD1 and Uzbekistan in MD2 . These are two of the weaker teams in Group K.
Portugal ranks fifth on the clean sheet odds list for MD1 . With a favorable fixture run, Mendes is expected to keep at least one clean sheet in the group stage.
2. He's a Locked-in Starter & In Top Form
The Times of India confirms Mendes is expected to start at left-back in Portugal's projected starting XI .
The same source calls him "one of the best full-backs in Europe under Luis Enrique, both defensively and in attack" and says "he makes Portugal a real danger on the left flank" .
3. He's an Attacking Full-Back with Real Output
The Fantasy Football Scout analysis explains why he's so valuable: "Mendes had five shots and 10 key passes in just four qualifying matches, getting forward at every opportunity. The left-back also has a share of dead-ball duties, another string to his bow."*
This attacking volume is exceptional for a defender. The "share of dead-ball duties" means he could be on corners/free kicks.
